Our first guestbook comment from back in 1996 Arbroath, or Aberbrothock as it was once called, entered recorded history in 1178 with the founding of the Arbroath Abbey. The town dates further back to Pictish times, with Pictish settlements found here and all over the Angus area. Arbroath is the largest of the Angus towns, with a population of around 24,000 "Red Lichties". The town is well known for the Arbroath Abbey and its significance in Scottish history. It was at the abbey in 1320, that the Declaration of Independance was signed by Robert the Bruce and Scotland's nobles, declaring the Bruce as their King. Also well known for its delicacy, the Arbroath Smokie, a tradition of smoking fish passed down through the generations. Smokies, in its many manifestations, can be found in most of the towns 20+ cafes and restaurants. No shortage of nightlife either, with over 25 pubs and nightclubs offering anything from a quiet drink and local Scottish music, to live bands and the latest chart music. Arbroath makes an excellent base for touring, with the cities of Dundee, St Andrews, Perth and Aberdeen all around an hours drive away. The town is also situated within an hours drive of over 30 golf courses and several fishing locations. Arbroath is also perfect for visitors touring Scottish castles, with around 25 castles located within 35 miles of the town. Some of these are open to the public offering tours, gardens and wedding facilities. With others in a ruinous state, or as private residences. At Five Gables House, we offer a weekly updated local "Whats On" guide. This has information on everything Arbroath has to offer, from Scottish ceilidhs, Gala days, annual events, theatrical shows, craft fairs, coffee mornings, indoor sales, disco's, karaoke and live music, to whatever else is on in the Arbroath and Angus area. |
