The
Returning Guest
Throughout history, the Scots have emigrated to other parts
of the world. We have accommodated over the years an increasing number of
guests researching their family history, or just visiting the area where their
relatives were from. And guests with links to the RM Condor Marine Base or
further back to the days of the Fleet Air Arm. Also the "Red Lichties",
people who were born or lived in the town, before moving to other parts of
Britain and the world. As well as in other parts of Scotland and England, we
ourselves have relatives in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Germany. The
Patterson name is a sept of the Clan Maclaren, and our own family also has
blood links with the family names of Sibbald, Brodie, Anderson, Drummond,
Wallace and Kelly. Famous names like David Dunbar Buick, who emigrated to America and
founded the Buick Car Manufacturing Company. Alexander Shanks, the inventor of
the modern day lawnmower. And James Chalmers, who came up with the idea for
the adhesive postage stamp, were all born in Arbroath. The world famous
Scottish entertainers Sir Harry Lauder and Andy Stewart also lived in Arbroath
for some time, as did the Olympic Gold medalist Liz McColgan and renowned
artist James Watterson Herald. The Angus and Dundee area has been the
birthplace to various innovative individuals including Sir Robert Watson Watt,
inventor of the radar. JM Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan. Ron
"Bon" Scott, the lead singer with the Rock group ACDC. And the
Hollywood actors Brian Cox, who has starred in Troy, Braveheart, Rob Roy and
The Ring amongst many others. And Ian McDairmid, best known as the Sith Lord
Emporer Palpatine in the last 4 Star Wars films. As well as our local
knowledge spanning over 60 years, we provide information for our guests about
the past history of Arbroath and the other towns and villages of Angus. Local
books and videos are available detailing various aspects on the history of the
area, and researching family ties. We can point you in the right direction as
to where you can gain help and advice on researching your family tree in
Angus, in most places for free. With every returning guest, we gain a little
more knowledge ourselves about Arbroath's proud heritage.
Most of our research has been about the history of Arbroath and the
surrounding villages of St Vigeans, Arbirlot, Auchmithie, Carmyllie, Redford,
Colliston, Guthrie, Friockheim, Inverkeilor, Barry, Lunan, Farnell, Kinnell,
Monikie, Letham, Usan, Boddin, Ferryden, Johnshaven, Inverbervie and St Cyrus.
But we
can also offer photographic, historical and research details on the other
towns of Angus including Carnoustie, Montrose, Forfar, Edzell, Kirriemuir,
Brechin, Monifieth, Broughty Ferry, Glamis, Stonehaven and the cities of
Dundee and Aberdeen.

Holland, who visit relatives in Arbroath. In February 2007, they chose to use
our dining area to celebrate the birthday of Kees Vermeulen. As asked for, we
arranged for Cally from the Arbroath British Legion Pipe Band to surprise Kees
with a few Scottish tunes.

The Disabled Guest
Five Gables House is the only B&B in Arbroath with all its rooms on the
ground floor. We also have a small ramp at our entrance door for easy wheelchair access. Our large seaview dining
area and guest lounge is also on the ground floor. And our spacious en-suite rooms all have step in showers,
with the exception of our family suite that has a bath with a shower overhead. Our rooms also come with
bedside lamps and remote controls for the TV, DVD and video recorders. The latest addition to our
garden area is our landscaped path system, that snakes down to both tiers of our garden. The path then
continues to another path leading to the Arbroath Golf Club. This path was designed to suit Grace and
Ron's daughter Susan, who has needed a wheelchair all her life. The path allows any disabled guests
assisted access to our garden table area and our garden pond area. It also makes access easier for guests
with pushchairs, prams and golf trolleys.
